I was sitting in Ed’s Pub Friday night waiting to sing a song when a fellow karaokean came in and said, can you believe Retro was voted the best venues in Albuquerque by Alibi Best of the City? I can believe it.
Just as when others won years before and others one each quarter and then for 2012 in the Call Me Ozz People’s Choice Awards. Just like people win in karaoke competitions that bring the most friends into a venue to cheer them on. I think every KJ thinks they’re the best, but I rarely see them checking out other show, so how would they know?
There are two reasons Call Me Ozz is NOT doing the People’s Choice Awards this year, or any karaoke competitions. One, I am retired from doing events until I can afford to hire a paid assistant and event coordinator. And two, I don’t believe any competition won on popular votes is a fair and accurate way to do it. In my opinion and many others those that won the Call Me Ozz People’s Choice Awards deserved to win the title however in some ways they didn’t.
What I have found is every venue; every KJ has a group of followers that would undoubtedly proclaim “their” KJ and or venue as the best. And on the other side of the coin there are probably equal amounts that proclaim that same venue and or KJ is the worst. Therefore it is my final opinion that there is really no way of saying one venue, or one KJ is actually the best.
I feel I can honestly say this because on most weeks I visit 4-8 venues, and I talk to a lot of people, and I hear it all. On one hand I will hear someone say this place is great, and then 5 minutes later someone will tell me that same place is the worst it’s ever been. A “Gossips Corner” is something I am seriously thinking of adding to the Newsletter.
MY OPINION: Every Venue, KJ and KJ Company has its strong and weak points. I enjoy every single place I go to. It very much depends on what YOU like and are looking for. I used to write a review on every place I went, I am currently working on re-integrating that program, it will be found here on the Newsletter. I have already re-begun updating the report card which scores each venue and KJ in a spreadsheet form. I get asked a lot…Hey Ozz where’s a good place for karaoke tonight? I am honest, I will send someone where I believe they will feel most comfortable based on how well I know them, if I don’t know them, I will send them to one of my “Favorite-Eights”.
If I can ever figure out a way to honestly rate the best, I will let you know.
Even old news is still news.....
Here are the stories of the past....
The EXPANSION of CALL ME OZZ-12/23/12
Fourteen months ago Ozz was asked to manage a karaoke contest for The Barley Room. Ozz knowing that he would need a place to post publicly the results of the contest daily he created the website, Call Me Ozz. At that time it was basically a home page and a page where you could see the daily results.
After the contest, because he would get so many phone calls and text messages of where is there a place to sing tonight? He created the “Find A Place To Sing Tonight” page. But that wasn’t good enough because some of the information was incorrect. So to confirm he set up a “Tour of Albuquerque” in just 12 days he visited all the known venues for confirmation.
At that time he only had 5 pages for the website so he added his “Bin Laden Crawled” page which was a huge reason he earned the title “Ozz”.
Just this last week 2 new members of Call Me Ozz have been added as admin assistants NIKKI and TICIA, both very well known and awesome singers in the Albuquerque area. And what is their job? Help Ozz keep up with the madness……or to even expand more?
Ozz has noticed that karaoke is only one facet in the Albuquerque/Rio Rancho nightlife. Karaoke will always be the bread and butter of Call Me Ozz, however there are times and folks out there might be looking for something different. The future expansion of Call Me Ozz will include Comedy, Burlesque, Open Mic, Live Bands, Theater, Movies, Concerts, Dining and much more to come. Moderators and administrative personal will be needed for these expansions. If you are interested, please send an e-mail to: OZZ@CALLMEOZZ.NET
Happy Holidays, and talk to you soon!
When Ozz first started going to Sneakerz, even before the name of Ozz existed he met a fellow karaoke singer by the name of Holly, now known as Bunny. Holly and Ozz became very good friends as she had moved here recently from New York where she had lost her loved one in the 911 attacks. They became very good karaoke buddies. When Ozz wrote the song “Bin Laden Crawled” Bunny was a huge inspiration to it because it hit home.
As time went on, they continued to become better and better friends, as the Call Me Ozz website began to grow and Ozz needed help covering the territory Bunny came on board and Bunny Land was developed.
When Bunny accepted a job offer in Dallas it was like why not? So Bunny and Ozz created a spider site off of Call Me Ozz called Call Me Bunny. Just like Call Me Ozz helps you with the karaoke happenings of Albuquerque and Rio Rancho, Call Me Bunny is to become that for Dallas.
The site is in the growing stages but already has many venues listed and Bunny works on it every day. We will keep you posted on the developments, and if you ever visit Dallas, be sure to contact her and go out and do karaoke with her!
HEALING PAINS-BREAKING THE CHAINS FUNDRAISER
Call Me Ozz is sponsoring a Fund Raiser for abused children during the month of February. We are still in the works of getting all the details worked out but we promise you, this will be one that goes down in the history books of the most eye opening fund raisers ever. It seems the children in crises are the ones forgotten. (Agency to donate to is still pending) During the month of February the Call Me Ozz team will be singing abused children songs at participating locations and you will be able to tip and the proceeds will go to the cause. Then in early March, there will be a fundraiser variety show (venue is till pending) with singers, magicians, skits, comedians, dancers and more that you can attend with a donation. For the show one karaoke singer with the highest bid will be permitted to sing. There will be other donations opportunities as well. We will keep you posted as this develops!
Did you know you can post your status, where you've been or where your gonna be in the Status Update Page? It's easy, just click on the topic, then Leave A Comment.....it prompts you from there!
BUT......DID YOU ALSO KNOW?
OZZ puts his comments about where he's been lately? So if you wanna know about a particular venue and what he thought about it, just go to the WHERE OZZ HAS BEEN topic and see what he said....
CLICK ON THE HEADER TO GO TO THE STATUS UPDATE PAGE FOR MORE INFORMATION....
The Home Page Project is done! We have moved the KJ SHOWCASE to thier own page....CLICK HERE to check it out. We have created an index, with headers and page descriptions for quick and easy links. There is a most popular index. And now a world wide community block of karaoke all around the world with just one click. And you will notice the quick buttons across the top are easier to see.
Call Me Ozz is a pretty extensive website and sometimes we realize it can overwhelm. The most popular pages have quick link buttons across the top of everypage. The new Complete Index Page has every page listed. Go there if you are looking for a page that is not listed across the top.Click on the header to check it out now.
I have been getting asked a lot lately, “What is Been There Sung That, and what does LA have to with Albuquerque?”
Been There Sung That is a live karaoke talk show streamed every Wednesday night at 9pm MST. Lyle Murdoc is the host with Dez as the co-host. They generally have a specials guest or two and they also sing karaoke on the show. It promotes karaoke all over the world. People get discovered in situations like this. It happens all the time, and even if not, it’s fun while we do it.
Sometime in 2012 I friend requested Lyle Murdoc. When he responded he asked, “did you want to be on the show?”. I said “What show”. He explained what it was and you know me, but of course! So we put together a show by recording 6 singers at The Soch. Of the six he chooses 3 to be on the show. He also did a live remote from my house with a lot of help from Kammo of Kammo’s Karaoke.
From there, he worked with Kammo to air another show. Kammo put together a show called “Extreme Karaoke”. It was a concert style show where he recorded footage from some of the best singers of Albuquerque to make it look like a rock concert. You can view this show on the BTST page.
Been There Sung That is a connection between Albuquerque, LA and The World as he has viewers from all over the world.
We are very excited that Lyle has decided to continue to grow this relationship with our community. It is gonna be an awesome week as he comes to visit us and we really hope you will follow us on as many stops as you can possibly handle. He will be filming footage for a future show. Let’s show him what Albu-Karaoke has to offer. CLICK HERE to see the tour schedule.
To the venues: This is great free promotion for you! There are a lot of people that travel between LA and Albuquerque. If they come here and have seen your venue on the show, good chance they will come to your place. Let’s pack these places during that week!
Gone, but not forgotten, that’s what this page is all about. This page is a memorial page for our singers that have left this world but their voices still ring in our heads. On this page you can add to their memorial, send us pictures to add to it, you can sign into their guestbook to share thoughts, feelings and memories about that person. Also, if you know someone who has passed away and would like for them to be added to the memorial page, you can do that as well! Click on the header above to check it out right now.
SINGIN' IN THE SMALL TOWN
New Mexico is full of small towns and we are sure each of these small towns have karaoke somewhere. Thanks to Cindy Bellelli we now have T or C/Elephant Butte listings. We would love to add every city in New Mexico. If you live out of town and would like to add your city and keep us posted when things change we would love to hear from you!
CALL ME OZZ TO RETIRE FROM EVENTS MARCH 3rd.....
To be more specific Ozz is retiring from Special Events. Call Me Ozz Dot Net has not yet reached the point that it can afford to hire paid employees to do what is needed to be done to properly promote and get the necessary results from special events. So after Healing Pains-Breaking the Chains Call Me Ozz Dot Net will begin to focus on the expansion of the website into a full service site for the entire night life of Albuquerque and Rio Rancho.
This expansion will not put karaoke on the back burner, in fact if anything it will bring more people to the site that had no idea it existed therefore bringing more new people into the venues as well as letting karaoke people know of other exciting things to do in the area.
Each “spider sight” will have a well known person in that field managing it. One with the same passion Ozz has for karaoke. As the site becomes more and more well known and sponsors support it Call Me Ozz Dot Net will be able to do a lot more, more effectively. In the meantime, Ozz will do special events but only if the event or the venue is willing to cover all of the expenses including hired assistants.
If any venue or KJ or anything else wants Call Me Ozz Dot Net to promote an event for them advertising on the site will be available however all the other promotion campaigns will not be included. Call Me Ozz Dot Net will always list all known events in the Newsletter and in The Special Events section of the Find A Place To Sing Tonight page.
In August of 2010 Ozz was asked to manage a karaoke contest for The Barley Room. So he scripted it, found the sponsors, found the judges and let everyone know there was gonna be a contest. Every week they had quallifying rounds, picking the top three each night till the sing off between 12 singers, 5 weeks later. They had 2 rounds. Each week he needed a place to post the weekly results, so hence Call Me Ozz dot Net was created to do just that. Rather than dumping the site, he kept it and grew it to where it is today. Click on the header to see this piece of history, complete with videos of the final sing offs.
The BEEN THERE SUNG THAT tour of Albuquerque of 2013 is now in the history books. Lyle Murdoc, owner and host of the weekly live karaoke talk show out of LA invaded Albuquerque on Tuesday, February 19th and sang in 10 venues in the Duke city in 5 nights.
We started the tour at an open mic night at Nexus Brewery with the extremely hilarious John Cuellar and friends, no peanut butter and girl scout cookies will never be the same. Then we visited Zero at Geckos and then ended the night with Tommy Hurrikane at Sidelines. And of course the wonderful rookie sheriff that pulled us over on the way home “because my plate didn’t come up”.
Night number two was airing the talk show live from Maloney’s with DJ Speed Racer from Kammo’s Karaoke on the board, and talk about exciting! It was like being in the audience of an Oprah show, only better! They picked 4 singers, Shantal, Milli, Allen and Bunny, if you missed it watch for the dubbed tape to come out.
Night number three took us to every corner of the city. We started our evening early, at 8pm at Graham Central Station with the very funny KJ Matt, then to Famous Amos at the Effingbar and ending our night with DJ Speed Racer at The Damn Bar.
Night number four took us to the other side of the city as we began early at Desert Greens with Tommy Hurrikane, then a quick ride down I-25 to Hollywood Casino with Howlin’ Coyote. (Let’s not forget I have a karaoke machine in my van, so yes we were singing the whole way there, I even sang I Don’t Know, driving…oops did I say that out loud?) Then to Fiesta’s where TnZ were rockin as always!
Night number five was an unexpected stay over, where he tore up Sidelines with Kammo. This is the short version, there was a lot of pictures and video taken that will be uploaded to the tour page soon. We will let you know when that happens! Thanks for all of your support, we really appreciate it and be sure to tune in every Wednesday night at 9pm.
Sometime last year I began taking pictures of all the singers at all the venues I was going to and uploading them into the "Find A Place To Sing Tonight" pages. After uploading about a hundred pictures it was making the pages load very slow so that's when the Singers Wall of Fame was created. It is now 3 pages long and couldn't even tell you how many pictures are there. Go see if you are there, and if not, check my schedule: WHERE IS OZZ TONIGHT and ask me to take your picture and upload it!
On Saturday, March 2nd, at 7:35pm, at Blackwater Music Venue, Healing Pains-Breaking the Chains variety show, a fundraiser for abused children in crises shelters began. Anne Ray the director opened the show with her personal story. She her 3 year old son was killed by her abusive husband. To make matters worse, she also lost her daughter from another dad to state custody at the same time. A grim reminder that child abuse and death is very real, and what’s worse is abusers are getting away with murder every day because our court systems are not doing their job in proving it.
Then our MC Bunnie Benton Cruse came on board as our MC and introduced our first act, Laticia Lovato singing Concrete Angel, followed by T-Gram with a great comedy act. Then, Judi Beare and the Meadowlark Dancers from Santa Fe and Rio Rancho took to the dance floor with some amazing line dancing. After giving away a 1 hour massage from Stream of Life as a door prize, Rachel Roncich made us laugh followed by Sandi Mc Daniels and Ro St James with their revised rendition of Summer Nights. A $30 gift certificate was given away as a door prize, then Kevin Kennedy graced us with one of his hilarious guitar songs and some belly busting laughs, and then Nikki Radtke made you think Evanescence was in the house as she sang Bring Me to Life. Then, the shirt that was auctioned off to the highest bidder Sandi Mc Daniels for $50 was awarded to her. Another massage was given away as a door prize and then Shantal Catnach and her partner David from Santa Fe made Salsa Dancing look so easy. A $5 gift certificate for Mc Donalds and $5 for Barley Room was given away and then the one and only Caveman hit the stage with his extremly only Caveman way to make you laugh your ass off way to do it, cuz we all know Caveman can make you do that! Michael Salazar, the one who bid the highest to sing in the show was on stage with Wonderful from Everclear. Ozz then closed the show with Hell Is For Children.
All in all it was a great show. The attendance was very disappointing considering so many people said they would support it when the idea was brought up and they did not show up, but on the bright side, the people who did show up dug very deep in their pockets bringing in close to $1,200.00 dollars. The goal was $2,000. The page and donation center will remain up and open until March 18th.
There were some items left for the silent auction so they will also be placed on the site for auctioning. This money is going to be donated to Amistad which is a crises shelter for abused children. Almost the worst of the worst abused. Most of these children have no where to go, no family, no friends. They receive federal funding under YDI for administrative costs and meals; however their United Way funding has been drastically cut which is what they use for activities.
Ozz has decided from this point forward, 10% of every dime that comes into the website for advertising, promotions and services will be donated there on a monthly basis. It’s time we take care of the children in need. Child abuse affects a child the rest of their lives; it’s time to put a stop to it.
Videos of the event are being uploaded to U-Tube as we speak. Once they are all uploaded links on the Healing Pains-Breaking the Chains will be put in place and you will know about it. Happy Singing! Till we meet again!
The limited edition Call Me Ozz logo buttons have arrived. Ozz will have them with him while he goes out and sings. Jst ask him for one. Click on the header above to find where he will be and when.
I know it sounds weird but most of the time I have a hard time figuring out what to sing for the month. On my song list page you can tell me what I should sing for the month. And while you are there you can watch some really cool videos of the songs I sing. Click on the header to let me know what to sing.
For about three weeks now Live Music Tonight Dot Net has been live and active. I searched long and hard for my director Brittania Ivie. She comes to us from a passion of live local music. Her dad, Don Ivie is the drummer for Idemnified a local band growing very fast in local notoriety.
Brittania has been on the live local band scene for quite some time now, and a lot of people I have talked to know exactly who she is. Her main expertise is in the Rock/Metal/Rap scene, which covers a huge majority of the live local scene in the Abq/RR area.
She has a grip of Web Design and Maintenance experience and has a die hard passion to help everyone in the live band scene to excel, just what I was looking for. Once she has a grip on the site and has some sponsors on boards, she will begin looking for a couple of sub-directors for Jazz/Blues/R&B/Symphony and Country.
I am very happy with what she has done so far and look forward to her taking the live band scene to levels we could have never imagined.
On Saturday, I am looking forward to training Kevin Kennedy to direct the comedy site, which we don’t have a name for yet, but I am sure Kevin will have that figured out. Kevin is very well known in the comedy scene and has some amazing stuff up his sleeve for us which I am gonna keep quite until HE lets it all out.
I am now looking for a director for the Live Theater site. The live theater will encompass, Live Plays, Burlesque, Drag and Spoken Word, The director does not have to have expertise in all those fields but will have to have internet, a computer, Microsoft word skills, a phone, a vehicle, and willingness to see at least 2 shows per week. Experience in sales and marketing would also be a huge plus. Myself, I will keep my eyes upon you karaoke addicts!
When I started this Crazy Train 20 month ago, I had no idea it would come to this, or go to where I plan on taking it. But I will say, if it wasn’t for you all supporting me and this site, it would not be here today. From the bottom of my heart I thank you more than you’ll ever know.
You might think I eat, sleep and drink karaoke....well you may not be too far off from the truth, but not exactly. I do other things and have other interests. Visit my bio page which includes a daily diary of stuff going on in my life....Click on the header to find out more. :)
E-MAILS LIKE THIS, KEEP ME DOING THIS FOR YOU!
Hello, Dear - I caught a glimpse of you tonight at Sunset and then we left to join Amos across town. What a loud and fun time that was. Anyway, I've been working so much lately that I haven't had a chance to see this website - What a great job you've done with it! Just wanted you to know that I loved it - we logged on to check on the Thursday night karaoke locations and.......we found them! Thanks for all the work you do on this site, just wanted you to know you're appreciated. I'd love to know how to have my own feature - how much do you charge, and what am I allowed to post/display? let me know, either write at the email or call my phone, Thanks! - Anne
It doesn't cost a dime and you will find about karaoke stuff before everyone else does. It's like having a VIP pass to all the happenings. It's quick easy and painless....click on the header to join!
TO BE SUCESSFUL-THE VENUE NEEDS TO ENGAGE
Well, it's about that time to talk about venues and their part in growing a great loyal karaoke crowd. I say this because lately I am hearing it again. "It's slow," "I expect the KJ to bring a following," etc, etc. Wake up VENUES! It's not likely that a following will follow a KJ just because they are successful somewhere else. It takes a long time to build up a following in YOUR neighborhood. I laugh when venues compare live band crowds to karaoke crowds. Seriously? Look how much you promote a live band compared to karaoke, I always see flyers, posters and web listings for live bands but NEVER for karaoke. YOUR best following can and will come from the people who already come to your venue, but instead of them coming once a week, now YOU can have them there twice a week. Of course once you get them there it's important that you have a great KJ and great service to keep them there. (Clean bathrooms help too). Also, When you are riding the wave, and business is great, don't get comfi and think you got it, and get cocky. That's the time to be advertising heavily, and promoting heavily, you WILL lose your customers, they move, they start school, they have kids, they die, competitors do what I just said....etc....keeping your pipeline full of new recruits is a must. Just had to say it.
Back in 2006, I re-wrote the song War Pigs to be more in modern time to Bin Laden Crawls. After our extremly awesome Navy Seals took him out I changed it to Bin Laden Crawled. Click on the header to see the full story, the lyrics and watch a video of the performance at Fiesta's.
RETRO TAKES THE CROWN FROM ED'S IN THE ALIBI'S BEST OF THE CITY
They are almost gone, and never to be re-printed.
It has finally happened. Graham Central Station has gone digital. I am pretty sure they were the last of venues using disks. Shortly after running 4 Sing N Wins in a row, they added the digital library of music. They also had the corporate sound engineer come in a resound Ally Cats. They also moved the KJ Booth on stage with the singers. I paid a visit to Graham a couple of weeks and would have to say it’s a lot better now.
Karissa is the new KJ, she is full of energy and smiles and is very attentive to the singer. They have karaoke on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.
ROLL WITH THE CHANGES.....
Call Me Ozz changes every day, literally. This website is a never ending info site for the night life of Albuquerque with karaoke being at the top of the list. Reading the weekly newsletter is the best way to keep up with all of the things going on. If you are a Call Me Ozz member you will receive an e-mail when the newsletter is published. To become a member right now CLICK HERE.
"HEY OZZ, WHY DON'T YOU LIST THE ADDRESS AND PHONE NUMBERS?"
This is probably the one question I get asked the most when I am out and about, so I thought I would answer it here. This website is a service to the karaoke community and the singer is put first here. The courtesy listing provides a free listing of every known venue and who the KJ is. Like any other business there are expenses associated with it. For a small fee (.03 cents per day) any venue may list their address, city, state, zip, phone number, website, features and specials. I would encourage you to support the venues that do have an enhanced listing or ask the ones that don’t why they don’t. The more sponsors Call Me Ozz has, the more Call Me Ozz can do for you!
It's kind of like a pack rat thing I guess. Visit the OLD NEWS STORIES page to see what you missed in previuos newletters.
In karaoke, there are 3 elements, the Venue, the Customer (Singer) and the KJ. Call Me Ozz promotes each of these elements. The SINGERS WALL OF FAME is a photographic library of the singers of Albuquerque, FIND A PLACE TO SING is a listing of all the venues that have karaoke and the KJ SHOWCASE is a photographic listing of all the KJ's and where they can be found. If you are a KJ and haven't submitted additional information for singers to find you, YOU are missing the train!
This website is like a history book in the making. As pages become less and less popular they are moved to the CALL ME OZZ MUSEUM. They are “gone” but not forgotten. Take a stroll down memory lane, you might learn something.
TWO NEW THINGS IN THE NEWSLETTER YOU SHOULD KNOW....
Been There Sung That is the worlds only live karaoke talk show, streamed live on the web every Wednesday night at 9pm mountain time. It is hosted by owner Lyle Murdoc and co-hosted by Dez Greer out of Los Angeles, California. This show features a special guest every week and they do sing live. It is quite entertaining.
Back in February, Lyle came to Albuquerque and hosted his show live from Maloney’s downtown. Visit the BEEN THERE SUNG THAT page to check out the show that was recorded live!
Every night that I am out, without fail I get to hear all the things singers like and dislike about one KJ, or Venue or another. I was thinking about adding a “Gossip Corner” to the newsletter to let the KJ’s, Venue’s and other singers hear what others have to say about them.
I have decided to nix that idea. The more I thought about it, I would rather share these thoughts one on one with the KJ or the Venue. I don’t believe it would be fair or right to publicly disclose what others think without allowing the KJ or the Venue the opportunity to change their course of action before it becomes public.
Also, this type of gossip is really no more than an opinion, which I wrote about a couple of weeks and had a fantastic very positive feedback from. If you want to know what I think of a venue, I would encourage you to read my reviews, LAST WEEKS will always be at the bottom of this newsletter, and previous reviews can be found in the PAST NEWS page. You can go further back by reading the forum below entitled WHERE OZZ HAS BEEN, and even further back to THE TOUR OF ALBUQUERQUE, to see who average is or above average, check out the REPORT CARD BY OZZ.
There are a couple of new things on the Newsletter I’d like to bring your attention to. For one, you can now comment on the main story or anything in the newsletter, the SINGERS FORUM page is in the process of being shut down as we have moved the forum here to the Newsletter page so that it can be interactive. Feel free to scroll through the topics and leave your comments.
The second thing is the OZZ WEEK IN REVIEW at the bottom of the newsletter. This is a review of where I went for the week, how it was and what I thought. Also, if you click on the REPORT CARD button, a spreadsheet will pop up which is a “scorecard” of the venues I visited.
Coming soon in the FIND A PLACE TO SING pages, on the courtesy listings, you will notice a number next to the venue in parentheses; this will be the overall score for that venue. 40 is a perfect score, but for the details you can always check the report card.

When I first started this site, it was to let the public know about the results of The Barley Room Karaoke Contest. Once the contest was over, I decided to add the Find a Place to Sing page because I would get calls and texts everyday wondering where to go. But then I would always get asked, “how is this place or that place.” So I decided to take a tour of Albuquerque to answer that question…..here is what I said….CLICK HERE
There have been a few new site changes this week, mainly on the home pages. When you first come to Call Me Ozz it takes you to the main home page. From there, you decide which site you are looking for, Karaoke, Comedy, and Live Music, Etc., whichever one you click on is where you will go. Take note of the top header of buttons once you get to the KARAOKE HOME PAGE. The top buttons will take quickly to the page you want. We have listed the most visited 9 pages. If you want to see all the pages available in the site, simply go to THE COMPLETE INDEX page. The next major change you will see is quick link buttons on each page that will take you specifically to the place on the page you want to go. It’s on this NEWSLETTER page and on THE FIND A PLACE TO SING PAGE right now if you’d like to try it.

"HEY OZZ, I THINK YOU'RE BEING BIAS!"....
I gotta laugh when I hear this. Obviously some people don’t know how anally organized I am. I thought I would take a minute to let everyone know how my schedule gets set. It is set 5 weeks at a time. I make sure I support a Live Music Event every other week and a Live Comedy Event every other week.
For karaoke, the venues are listed in an A, B, C, D order. “A” venues are venues that support the web site financially. They are put in the schedule first. “B” venues are venues that may not support the site financially; however they or the KJ supports it by letting people know Ozz from Call Me Ozz is there and what it’s all about, they are scheduled in secondly. “C” venues are venues that don’t support the site financially or give plugs to, however are a decent venue, they are scheduled in thirdly. “C” venues are venues that do not support the site financially, or give plugs, and is really not worth going to at all. These venues are scheduled in if there is a spot.
Most generally A, B, and C venues are seen every 5 weeks. I believe this is the fairest way to give the singer (the customer) the best information on what is going on out there so they can find their favorite place to sing. You can check out my 5 week schedule anytime CLICK HERE.
Feel free to drop me a note anytime if you have an idea that can make this site better for you, without you, I would have no reason to be here.
Have you heard? We have a memorial page for those who have sung in our hearts but have passed on. This page was designed to remember those and allow you to leave your thoughts, or add to their memorial, or even adds someone who is not posted. It was nice to see it actually begin to get used. Brad Lewis left us in December, in January I received an E-Mail from Elizabeth Galvez of Broken Eardrumz Karaoke letting me know about it, so I set up a basic profile. In February I received and e-mail with a picture and more information about him including a link to his U-Tube Memorial from a long time friend of his. If you have any contribution to this page, it would be greatly appreciated by everyone. CLICK HERE to check it out.
After a night out, I write a report about how my visits were the night before. But probably better yet I rate the venue on a report card based on Service, Sounds, Crowd and the KJ. Each category can get up to ten points with a perfect score of 40. You can view the REPORT CARD below in detail. However, now you can see the score in the FIND A PLACE TO SING TONIGHT page.
Ozz will be in Dallas over Memorial Weekend checking out the Dallas scene.
BOOP KARAOKE, NOT VISITED
I get called out on this quite a bit. I do not visit Boop Karaoke venues for good reason. I would suggest you check out Call Me Ozz Policies which can be found on the KARAOKE HOME PAGE, on the bottom of the page, on the right hand side there is a button that says “Policies”. However, because Sneakerz was one of my first karaoke homes, I will be returning there soon, since the manager is gone. Watch my schedule in the ‘WHERE IS OZZ” section for the returning date.
5-16-13:
Tonight was the long awaited for EFFINGBAR sing n win, Jagermeister Cooler Give Away and what an awesome night it was. The singers came early, at 9 o’ clock there 15 singers ready to roll. By midnight there were a total of 33 singers, 29 eligible for the give away. The first four drawn won backpacks from Jager and Bud Light, the next sixteen won Bud T-Shirts and Jager sweat bands. The next one, won the Jack Daniels Bucket Game. The next five won Bar Mirrors. Unbelievably, the next one, won a Jameson banner, but she had left! Then Milli won the Bud Light Cooler and the winner of the Jagermiester Cooler was Rain. All in all it was an amazing night. Amos and Joe keep the singers singing and the wait staff kept the drinks and food a flowin. Effingbar has karaoke every Thursday and Saturday nights beginning at 9pm. Effingbar is a Call Me Ozz sponsor.
Rain wins the Jager Cooler
Milli wins the Bud Light Cooler
WHERE TO BOWL....COMING SOON!
HOW MUCH CAN THE KJ CONTROL THE SHOW?
A couple of months ago I wrote a story about how to make a karaoke show successful the venue must engage in promoting just as much as the KJ if not more! CLICK HERE to read the story. But what happens when the venue gets the people there? Whose job is it to keep the customer there? Just as it is a team effort to get them there, it’s the team of the KJ and the venue to keep them there. This is why my REPORT CARD rates a venue in four categories: Service, Sounds, Crowd and KJ Performance.
But how much control does the KJ have over these four categories. My opinion? 90%. You may ask what? The reason I feel that way is this. Obviously KJ Performance is 100% the KJ responsibility, how well he or she knows their library, and how they treat the singer.
The Crowd response in my opinion is 90% the KJ. I feel 10% is the service of the venue because they can create a bad vibe if they provide bad service, but the other 90% IS the KJ. This was proven at Maloney’s with KJ Speed Racer when I was there Wednesday night. For the first hour there was no crowd response, and then Speed made a comment that anybody who has the guts to get up and sing deserves applause, from that point forward the applause was tremendous and it changed the entire attitude of the venue.
When it comes to sound, it could be a little of everything. I have noticed venues with a lot of wood and carpet always have better sound verses tile and concrete; however, the skill of the KJ can make matter better or worse. Speeds sound at Maloney’s is phenomenal, his sound at Blackbird is as good as he can make it, but he does battle concrete and tile there, but compared to other KJ’s there, he makes it sound the best.
When we talk about service, you would think 100% the venue. While I would agree I would say the KJ indirectly affects it too. If the KJ is not liked by the wait staff they will have an attitude and it will rub off onto the customer. Also, if the KJ receives a lot of complaints about the service, the KJ SHOULD LET management know, it is best to let the owner know. Believe it or not, of the people I talk to all the time, the #1 reason people STOP GOING TO A SHOW IS BAD SERVICE!
I am using KJ Speed Racer as my main example in this story for a couple of reasons. For one, he was voted the best KJ in the city of 2012 by the People’s Choice of the Albuquerque Karaoke Community. For two, he has been with Kammo’s Karaoke and DJ Services for nine years, and I have personally been to hundreds of his shows and without a doubt he knows exactly what he is doing. In comparison to all other sound systems and sign up systems Kammo’s without a doubt is the most advanced.
It is always my goal to first provide a service to the singers of the area. Second to the venue success and last the KJ and the Company. I hope that the KJ’s and the Venues will think about these things that I said if they are noticing a decline in their karaoke nights, it’s what I hear when I am out and about.
Your comments are not only always welcome, but encouraged. Feel free to leave them in the Forums below.
Call Me Ozz is preparing for the next edition to the family, “Where to Bowl?” This spider site will feature Locally Owned and Operated bowling alleys, league information, open bowling information, equipment and special events. We are currently looking for a director for this site. For more information CLICK HERE.
DEAR VENUE: CHECK YOUR SERVICE BEFORE YOU BLAME THE KARAOKE!
I started singing karaoke 12 years ago at the Brio when Charles used to run it. I only went on the weekends and then down to once a night on the weekends. Although the KJ and the crowd were great so was the service. For many years I only went to The Brio, Sneakerz and Spectators, mainly in support of the karaoke company, of course because I was a regular the service was incredible.
What became interesting was when I ventured outside the box beginning in 2010. As I would go into venues where I was unknown I couldn’t believe how really terrible service was everywhere I went, I often wondered if I had forgotten my deodorant sometimes. What I noticed was the regulars always got great service, except for a few venues. For business practice I will not name the venue I am talking about in this story.
This one particular venue I would visit because my friends were going there had karaoke 2 nights per week. It was always busy both nights, most of the time 15-30 singers and lots of people who just came to listen. As time went on I began to notice a steady decline in attendance, and all along even as a regular I was never really happy with the service, sometimes I would sit for a half an hour before I even got noticed. In talking to other people they were experiencing the same problem.
Now a few years later I run into many of the previous regulars of this venue and have asked them why they don’t go there. Every single one of them has the same answer, “Horrible and inconsistent service.” It has nothing, and never did have anything to do with the KJ, the KJ Company or even the singers.
Karaoke competition is fierce, there is not a lack of venues to visit in this town. Dear Venues: Make sure your service is tip top, make sure your establishment is clean, and if you serve food, make sure it’s good. Remembers, that one singer that came in tonight “to check you out”, will make a decision at the end of the night, to come back, or try someplace else.

We want to keep this site alive and growing, you can help by from time to time Google and Yahoo search “Karaoke in Albuquerque” and clicking on the site. This is how websites get to the top of their listings, and then when someone is looking for a place to sing from out of town, they will most likely find us. Also if you know of any businesses that would like to help support the site financially we have ads for as low as $10 per month, or they can sponsor with gift certificates to make singing in Albuquerque so much more fun and interesting.
There are some venues I can't get to every month and therefore are not reported on the report card or the review page. These are Boop, Moriarty and Ten Pins. If you would like to do this let us know, just use the "Contact Us" form to the left.
Also, visit the website every day. It changes everyday, literally. Tell your freinds, and when you visit a new venue, PLEASE tell the KJ and the server you saw it on Call Me Ozz

This last year it was Boy-Once, the year before was Man-Donna, and Ozz just had to play. Check out the pictures in THE SINGERS WALL OF FAME PAGE 3.

FOX N HOUND FOX ICON CONTEST
Your last chance to qualify is next Wednesday, June 26th. After that they will begin the elimination rounds. They do have open karaoke every night after the contest until closing time.
We never wanna see a venue go away, and especially Evolution. June will be there last month in existence. The lease has expired and Robbie has decided to go home and be with her family in Santa Rosa. Over the years Exhale and then Evolution has seen many, many singers through its doors as well as KJ’s and KJ Companies. It was the host venue of the People’s Choice Awards and countless benefits. It will be a real shame to loose this venue as it has brought many joys to our community. You will be missed, and may your days be blessed Robbie.
BEN REYES FROM FADE THE SUN KJ'S @ HOOLIGANS
When I first started going to Sneakerz to sing karaoke there was a guy by the name of Ben always there, and loved it when I sang The Zoo. As time went on he was so excited when he got his band Fade the Sun going. I lost touch with Ben until last Friday night when I showed up at Hooligans for some karaoke. Guess who Ben-Addicted is? Yep! He has never done the KJ thing so he is in his learning stages, but just knowing Ben, he will become one of the top kick KJ’s in the city, I have no doubt, support him, but be patient with him.
TAMMY'S EDGE COMES TO LIFE WITH KARAOKE
Tammy's Edge on Rio Grand features karaoke with DJ/KJ Sarah Moya (Draztik) on the first Friday of every month beginning on June 7th! CLICK HERE to checkout her facebook page.---SPECIAL NOTE ABOUT JULY: Because the first Friday in July is on Independence Day Weekend, it will be held on July 12th!
Do you get lost on Call Me Ozz? We can help you find your way around. On the KARAOKE HOME PAGE, simply click on the TUTORIAL LINK for some help. The tutorial describes the most popular pages and then includes a link to the complete index.
Wanna know who Call Me Ozz is? It’s not just Ozz, in fact there are 5 very dedicated people besides Ozz that keeps you informed and up to date if you wanna go out to sing, watch a live band, get some laughing on or see a live act! Visit the CONTACT US page to see who they are.
Normally when I make my schedule for the next 5 weeks, I first put in all of the Call Me Ozz sponsors. Then I put in my favorite venues and favorite KJ’s. Then I put in Comedy and Live Music. I then fill in the open slots with everyone else.
July will be a bit different for two reasons. One, it really bugs me when I look at the report card and see blanks. These blanks exist because the venue is out of the Albuquerque or Rio Rancho proper or it’s a Boop venue. For July, these venues will be visited and rated as it will become very important for the completion of the new page VENUE PROFILES.
For Two: Venues that are chosen as part of the Dinner and Concert give away will take top priority. (These venues were chosen because over the last two years they and or the KJ’s have heavily promoted Call Me Ozz. These venues/KJ’s are: KJ/DJ DraZtik (Sarah Moya), KJ/DJ Speed Racer, Tommy Hurrikane, Famous Amos, Fito Garza/Rock Star Karaoke, Graham Central Station, Howlin’ Coyote, Ben Reyes/Hooligans, Elizabeth Galvez/Broken Eardrumz, and Kammo.)
Stay tuned for the schedule so you can be sure to be there to get a ticket to enter in the drawing!
LOUIE'S AND SLATE STREET PLAYING MUSICAL KJ'S
Ben-Jammin is back at Slate Street on Thursday nights and KJ/DJ Speed Racer is back at Louie’s on Saturday nights. Tommy Hurrikane is getting some much needed rest on those nights but probably not for long I am sure. You can still find him at Sidelines on Monday and Tuesday, Fox n Hound on Wednesday and Desert Greens on Friday.
CALL ME OZZ IS NOW LIVE THEATER!
Call Me Ozz is very excited to welcome aboard the latest spider site: ALBUQUERQUE on STAGE. Directed by Elizabeth Galvez, owner and operator of Broken Eardrumz Karaoke, which can be found every Monday night at Malarky’s! Elizabeth has been involved with the Albuquerque Theater scene for many, many years and has a passion for it as I do for karaoke. This site will feature Live Plays, Burlesque, Drag, Spoken Word and Audition Information. Visit her site and let her know you dropped by. Welcome Aboard!
WIN DINNER AND TICKETS TO BURLESQUE!
Win Dinner for Two at FIESTA’S and 2 tickets to the DIRTY DEEDS, CIRCUS of SIN burlesque show at ELLIOTT’S on Saturday, June 29th featuring live music from 3 local bands as well. To enter in the drawing, be where Ozz is, and sing a song, you will be given a numbered ticket. Enter it on the website. On Monday, June 24th, Elizabeth from Broken Eardrumz will be drawing the lucky winner at 11pm. Ozz will be at Desert Greens and Lucky Lanes on Friday and Effingbar on Saturday. You can also enter on Monday at Malarky’s. GOOD LUCK!
WIN DINNER AND TICKETS TO A KICK ASS CONCERT!
Beginning in July and new promotion will begin. Call Me Ozz wants to send you to Dinner for Two at El Norteno and then to a very awesome concert on August 10th. Venues and KJ’s that have supported and promoted Call Me Ozz over the last two years will be the included venues. Just like the Burlesque Promotion, if you are at a venue and sing while Ozz is there you will receive a numbered ticket to enter on the website. A drawing will occur to determine the winner. (Schedule and drawing location TBA at a later time.) Stay tuned and good luck!
