Most of us have heard of the Sound Choice Police and they’re coming to get ya! Especially if you are a KJ, you probably have heard of them.
In case you haven’t, this refers to the owners of Sound Choice, sending out secret agents to check on KJ’s during their shows to see if they are using their music tracks for commercial use. If you’ve been singing for a while, then you know Sound Choice is the most popular tracks around.
You see, when Sound Choice began creating karaoke tracks, their licenses that they bought to use the music were not approved for public demonstration, therefore every time one is used for public karaoke it is copyright & trademark infringement, how crazy is that? Karaoke has been in the American bars for over 30 years, that’s where people go to have fun, it’s ok to sing alone in your living room, or at your 13 year old daughter’s birthday party….I guess….
Sound Choice should have known (and I’m sure they did) their tracks would be used for commercial use in bars. About 5 years ago, Sound Choice began loosing money; people were no longer ordering their CDG’s as the new age of digital download completely took over. All of the sudden a handful of people were selling hard drives with tens of thousands of tracks on a hard drive. Sound Choice decided to make money through lawsuits. They began going to venues and requiring KJ’s to prove that they owned a disc for every Sound Choice song they had on their hard drives. If you refused to comply with and audit or could not prove it, you were sued for un-Godley amounts of money and some KJ’s even faced prison.
Sound Choice began their rampage state by state, until Las Vegas last year was the last known attack. Things have now changed and Sound Choice now allows digital hard drives as long you can prove you own the disks, have purchased the rights from them, or use a legal program such as Karma, Compu Host, or The Cloud.
While I am not one to condone trademark infringement or copyright infringement, people who go out and sing karaoke are out to have a good time, they are not out to become superstars. The KJ’s and Companies are not making a fortune like the original artists do and have, nor do they make the money the Sound Choice people do. Why not sue the singers for singing the song?
If you are approached by the Sound Choice police or you receive a letter threatening to sue you, know first that THEY actually cannot take your equipment without a search warrant. THEY cannot make you comply with an audit. However, they can file a lawsuit and make you prove that you are innocent. Most of the KJ’s operating in the Albuquerque area is legal. If you own a hard drive that you did not purchase legally, you are pirating if you are using it for commercial use. We don’t know if Sound Choice is done, but the best thing you can do, is operate legally not worry about it.

Kelly Q came in from L.A. and began working for Kammo's Karaoke. She is no longer with him. Kammo is covering the gigs until he can find someone else.

Unfortunately sometimes we have to say goodbye to our great singers, friends and family. Call Me Ozz has a page dedicated to those who have left us. Visit the Rest In Peace memorial page if you know someone who should be there or if you'd like to leave a comment in one of their guestbooks. Fortunately we did not have to say goodbye to anyone last month.
